The snakebelt dream is over

A good day for rugby was spoiled by a good clifton side.
The day didn’t start well with a certain player letting the side down again at the very last minute by not turning up – showing a lack of respect to his team mates, resulting in a quick promotion for Ben Bailey coming out of retirement/exile/Saturday shopping duties with the missus.
Still, a strong side awaited the arrival of Clifton for what would turn out to be a tough game. I say wait, because wait we did – Clifton apparently not realising it was a 2.30 KO despite terry letting them know in the week. I feel sorry for the butler who didn’t pass the message on, JEEVES!
We eventually KO’d and from the start it was clear that Clifton had a side with a couple of standout players who made life very difficult for us, their 7 in particular being the instigator of disrupting our possession by tackling everything and slowing down virtually every breakdown (illegally or not), stopping us playing with pace like we are used to. Their backline attacked with pace all game.
A couple of Clifton penalties and a converted try made the half time score 13-0 against us, but we knew we could still get back into the game and the result was far from decided.
After the break, certain players started taking responsibility for trying to turn the game around. An inspired Rich Stone, who knows how much it means to win this game, made a lovely break beating several tacklers and offloaded just short of the line to Vince Murrell to score in the corner. Conversion missed, but dings back in the game.
An example of the dings spirit was highlighted when Clifton attacked from a scrum in our 22, their strong running 7 hurtling towards the line in what looked like a certain try, only to be chopped down by the diminutive George Hooper, who tackled well all game. Try saved but a flowing move moments later resulted in another try for Clifton.
Plenty to work on for our next game, but positives to take forward too.
Final score 18 – 5.
