A tough day at Shaftesbury Park for Dings Crusaders as they finished 2nd to a dominant Newport team.
With Newport taking first blood with just 2 minutes on the clock, they took advantage of space on the wing spotting the gap and dotting down to open the scoring with 7 points, but shortly after, Dings rising star, Ollie Smith broke the line, taking advantage of a Newport open play error, drawing an offside penalty. Finn Fielder (10) took the opportunity for 3 points. Game On!
From the restart, Newport gained a scrum, 5m out, and a strong push from them gave them a further 7, 3-14.
Dings played running rugby, exploiting the width and switching play, but were unable to capitalise on the few occasions they made it to the line.
The game switched again with an all-out aerial bombardment, and with a loose ball and an unlucky bounce for Newport, Solomon Taufa gathered to dot down between the sticks. 23 minutes in 10-14.
Like fighting stags, the rest of the half was mostly played out in the midfield, neither side giving an inch. But another loose ball and Smith carries 50m to score giving another sitter to Fielder.
Half Time 17-14
The second half was a different story.
Two almost back-to-back yellow cards for forwards Harry Hone and Matt Lane left the Dings men with 13 against a resurgent Newport. Despite making their way into the Newport red zone at least twice, they just couldn’t stretch the final inches to score and the numbers kept rising for Newport taking the game with forward power, ending the game 17-47
Newports try scorers Josh Reid; Daffyd Buckland; Henry Palmer; Wade Langley; Josh Skinner; Luke Crane; Ewan Prwys-Jones; and conversions from Carwyn Penny (2) and Jack Lloyd (4)
