Getting to know Dave Wheeler

Getting to know Dave Wheeler

Dings Lad25 Mar 2014 - 08:13

Welcome to the SIXTEENTH addition of Getting To Know. It’s a chance to get to know some of the players, legends, characters and old farts of DINGS

Name: David Wheeler

Nicknames: wheels (although many believe this is linked to my surname, it actually relates to my deceptive pace, no lies!)

Position: hooker

Previous clubs: Imperial juniors and Bristol juniors

Representative Honours: Bristol combination

Trophies/Medals: 3xGloucester cup – Combination cup winner – Combination cup runner up

How did you come to join Dings Crusaders: Chairman Lloyd encouraged me to join by trading my services for help getting an apprenticeship.

Worst rugby moment: Last year’s Bristol combination cup final v Old Reds.

Best rugby moment: I quite like telling everyone about my last minute try v Bridgewater away. If you weren’t there I will quite happily run you through it step by step. (the more ciders I have the longer the run was)

Toughest opponent: Vili Ma'asi V Leeds (Tongan international) I reckon I could take him now though

Toughest team: All round team then probably Leeds but Jersey’s forward pack was toughest for me personally

Favourite away ground:
Jersey (international duty for the dings, say no more)

Funniest coach trip memory: Stopping at Reading services and me, Baggy and Wright-Hider un-towed someone’s boat and attached it to another car. All other recollections of coach trips are vile and names will not be mentioned but Mike Kempton and Elliott Goodman you disgust me. Naked sumo was pretty good too!

Favourite Dings player to play along side and why: Barry Cole (legend). While I was emerging as a 1st team regular Baz looked after me and that man could scrummage.

Dings player(s) you would have liked to have played rugby with/with more: Simon Knight, (not just for passing down his knowledge with the Doris’s) only played with Simon a few times, he wasn’t the most skilful of players but had passion in abundance, aggression and commitment. Three qualities’ you can’t train for but will take you that extra mile. Top bloke to follow onto a rugby pitch

What sport would you be doing if you weren’t playing rugby: Darts (it’s what every man dreams) Great excuse to be at the pub all the time and no matter how ugly they are they are always escorted to the oche by half naked woman. My body shape doesn’t suit much else unless I was Japanese.

Well thank you wheels we all know you a little better.

Getting to know is out every Monday untill the end of the season. keep an eye out as you never know who it might be
