Name: Steve Lloyd
Nicknames: Tiddler and I suspect some that I’ve never heard.
Position: Fly Half/Hooker
Previous clubs: Played one season at junior level for Bishopston but been at Dings ever since I was 16.
Representative Honours: Captained the Bristol Combination at both hooker and scrum half, Bristol Rugby Club, Dockers RFC, Old Elizabethans 7 `s winners for Toppers Army.
Trophies/Medals: Where do I start, seem to have many trophies mostly from the clubs we go to, Combination Cup Winners for two consecutive years, at least 6 losers medals, Glos County Cup final winner, all the Dings club awards apart from the sportsman of the year, not sure why?
How did you come to join Dings Crusaders: My older brother said he would break my arms if I didn’t play for the junior team he had set up and also my dad said if I didn’t I would have to go into a home.
Worst rugby moment: Ha, where do I start. Was hard to take losing all those finals and even more semi finals; most of them were Gary James’s fault. When we finally did win in 1994 I was captain so it made it all the sweeter and there’s something else that I can’t quite seem to recollect.
Best rugby moment: Too many to mention, winning that last league game v St Marys in the last seconds of the match and watching Darren Lloyd slide into score from his half way line and looking around to see Phil Knowles spinning on his back in the mud in a white rain coat and Freddy Spong kicking the ground in disbelief ha ha.
Being Chairman when we went to Berry Hill needing to win to clinch the league title and to get into the National Leagues for the first time ever and a year later Wakefeild RFC folding to save us from relegation, no disrespect intended.
Playing with my sons, although I quickly realised I was way too old and should settle down.
Toughest opponent: I bumped into a real tough looking guy then realised it was me in front of the mirror! No really Peter Chart at Brixham was always a real handful especially when I had a water bucket & sponge in one hand and my other hand in my pocket.
Toughest team: Cinderford or Gloucester Spartans in their hey day.
Favourite away ground: Clifton/Taunton anywhere where the trophy Cabinet is left unlocked.
Funniest coach trip memory: All of them, I can’t remember one in particular but seeing the chairman’s special brew going down a storm was always a favourite, we really didn’t stop laughing.
Not really a coach trip but one memory sticks out, a trip to Frome`s new ground and after the game a group of us thought it would be funny to play with a bubble gum machine, well one deft punch clean through the container meant that at least 200 bubble gums cascaded onto the floor.
Away to Taunton, watching two masked men climb the new flag pole and release the Taunton flag.
Favourite Dings player to play along side and why: Nick Seward, he was exceptional and became better and better , mainly due to leaving the `Swebbies` drinking team and meeting up with a certain Jamie Knowles. Gary Peters was always good to have on your side, he always watched my back and he used to lend me his comb and hair gel.
Dings player(s) you would have liked to have played rugby with/with more: I’ve been lucky having spread my playing days over a few years, Matt Norman as he would have become a great player instead he decided to preserve our countries independence and play with guns. Jamie Knowles as he showed so much promise and gave an indication of that when he had a certain Paul Spicer in his pocket in the last league game of 1993/94. A very serious knee injury meant that he never played again.
What sport would you be doing if you weren’t playing rugby:
Tough one, I was asked to consider the Red Bull Cliff Diving Team as a career but rugby seemed to have more excitement and jumping off the ledge of the Dings bath was way high enough for me.
Well thank you Mr Chairman we all know you a little better.
Getting to know is out every Monday till the end of the season. keep an eye out as you never know who it might be.
