Getting to know Will Tobin

Dings Lad31 Mar 2014 - 07:16

Welcome to the SEVENTEENTH addition of Getting To Know. It’s a chance to get to know some of the players, legends, characters and old farts of DINGS

Name: Will Tobin

Nicknames: Tobias, Tobes, Tiberius, Cow-head, Loaf-head. Big-Head, Massive-Head etc

Position: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14

Previous clubs: Nailsea & Backwell

Representative Honours: North Somerset U15s and U16s, Somerset U17s, Bristol Combination U20s.

Trophies/Medals: Junior: Newbury 10s Plate, Bristol Combination U16s runners up. Clifton 7s U17s Winner (at U16), Keynsham 7s U17s Plate Winner, Somerset District Champions for North Somerset. Player of the Season, Top Try-Scorer
School: Bristol Schools Combination Cup: Runners Up 2010, Plate Winner 2011 & Cup Winner 2012 (despite Guesty cheating and fielding a load of ringers against us!)
Dings: Won the league with the 3s but I think that medal must still be in the post. Arthur Payne Trophy for Young Player of the Season, 3rd Team Player of the Season.

How did you come to join Dings Crusaders: When our age group folded at Nailsea & Backwell, Kev Spencer brought us up here so you could all have a laugh at how posh I was and I just ended up staying.

Worst rugby moment: I think it could be getting beaten for the past two seasons for club top try scorer, I was soooooooo close. Although other bad moments would include “hyper extending my ankle” or when “some b****** stole my carrier bag.”

Best rugby moment: Any and every time that we play and beat Clifton. Especially this season when we beat them 71-0 for the 2nds.

Toughest opponent: Playing in the Daily Mail National Schools Cup we were drawn against Kings College Taunton and I was propping against pretty much Pat Parsons but a bit shorter, a tiny bit less smelly and probably weighed a bit less, anyway he was still about 20 stone and every scrum he would turn me inside out and push me back through my own backside. As if that wasn’t enough on three separate occasions he dislocated my entire ribcage which I didn’t even know was possible.

Toughest team: Cinderford at Junior level always used to be an unpleasant experience especially as we always had to play them away for some reason. They were as you can imagine a typical Gloucester side, big, hard and hairy. The ref was always from Gloucester and he would always take their side when the inevitable 30 man brawl would break out which was every other phase. Apart from that, coming off the pitch looking like a tiger due to some creative “clearing out of rucks” on their part only added to the experience.

Favourite away ground: Redruth, my ancestral home. It is a great experience coming out of the tunnel onto that pitch where many an international team have done the same thing.

Funniest coach trip memory: My favourite moment so far has got to be when we were coming back from Matson on Louis’ Dad’s special bus and after having a few tins Jag was dribbling at the back and the only word we could get out of him was “mbargos” we then proceeded to stop off at a pub and waltzed in there and while everyone was drinking pints he asked if he could see the cocktail menu!

Favourite Dings player to play along side and why: Pat Parsons. He is a pretty destructive force and he always passes me the ball what more could you want! I also like playing alongside the people who came up through the age groups with me.

Dings player(s) you would have liked to have played rugby with/with more: I think it would have to be Kevin Spencer, the amount of pictures of him around the clubhouse must have meant he’s at least half decent and hopefully he would re-grow his tache for the occasion.

What sport would you be doing if you weren’t playing rugby: I would say rugby league but I’m not sure that counts. I probably would still be boxing if it wasn’t for rugby.

Well thank you tobias we all know you a little better.

Getting to know is out every Monday untill the end of the season. Keep an eye out as you never know who it might be...
